Learning poker odds is essential to prevent loss wherever possible.  When you have played a long session of play, it is possible that you just end up even and you might be thinking about the many hundred dollars, while you are sitting in the table after you have put your money to the pot.  The money might no more seem to be yours because there can a card beyond probability that kept you beaten.  In some cases after all the learning poker odds and application there are going to be implied collusion and that is really an unavoidable cost of playing.

In this case since you are in a flush you raise to see what the other player has, in such a case if three other players are going to call your raise then in most cases you are not going to get the information about the card that you are looking for.

In many cases by learning poker odds in situations similar to this it is better to get the draw in a cheap way as possible.  You need not bother to raise unless you hit a flush because there is always going to be someone waiting to call in the end.  

After learning poker odds you will come to understand how important it is to fold as many unworthy hands at the earliest. There is no point in just playing to showdown, because ultimately you need to have the best hand in the comparison.
